Doumbek Workshop

131 Spring St. Portland, ME, 12:15-2:15pm

1st hour - All levels, 2nd hour - Mixed level/intermediate

$30 for both hours, or $20 for one hour

The 1st hour will cover doumbek fundamentals, and will emphasize how to get a great sound out of your drum. Subjects focused on will include holding the drum, proper hand positions for the 'doum' and 'tek' strokes, and popular Arabic rhythms. Shawn will also discuss drum selection and tuning.

The 2nd hour will move into more intermediate and advanced material. Topics covered will include how to produce the often difficult and misunderstood 'slap', or 'pop' stroke, finger rolls, the 'half-pop', more advanced rhythms and variations, plus dance accompaniment. Shawn will also discuss how to break down and simplify complex music and odd-meter rhythms, along with practice methods and tips

Following the workshop, Shawn will be available for private lessons. The rate is $40/hr. Shared lessons with one additional student are also available at $45/hour.

Shawn teaches a wide variety of instruments, incuding frame drums (lap-style, riq. tar/bendir, tamburello, kanjira), ghatam, cajón, Irish percussion (bodhrán, spoons, bones), and conga. He also teaches konnakol, the art of South Indian vocal percussion, along with the South Indian rhythmic system.
